International Applicants

Back to contents
Overseas applicants may not appear on a UK voters roll or credit database, making it difficult for us to assess their credit worthiness. It is therefore vital that we have proof of their identity i.e. Passport.

There are several scenarios for international applicants. The following outlines how we deal with the common ones:

  1. International applicant who has been in the UK for over 6 months and has been working for at least 6 months.

This applicant can be referenced on any service provided that he or she supplies:
    • A copy of their passport
    • Proof of residency at their current UK address
    • Full employment details, including a contract of employment
    • Previous/current landlord information (if applicable).
The application will be assessed in the normal way.
  2. International Applicant who has been in the UK for over 6 months and is not working.
This applicant can be referenced using Enhance, Advantage or Extra provided that he or she supplies:
    • A copy of their passport
    • Proof of residency at their current UK address
    • Managing agent/Landlord information (if applicable)
    • Proof of financial strength i.e. Bank / Building Society statements.
The application will be assessed in the normal way and will always require a guarantor.
  3. International applicant who has just arrived in the UK to start a new job in a recognised professional post e.g. nurse, teacher, accountant.
This applicant can be referenced using Enhance, Advantage or Extra provided that he or she supplies:
    • A copy of their passport
    • A contract of employment or job offer (confirming pay package and breakdown, e.g. basic and commission, and signed by Personnel / Human Resources department with the signatory's name and position in the company clearly printed), covering the whole period of the Tenancy plus an acceptable reference from previous employment, if applicable.
The application will be assessed in the normal way.

If this information is not available a UK-based guarantor (earning 3 x the rental income) will be required or, the applicant will need to pay the full rent for the term of the tenancy in advance in addition to your normal deposit.

  4. International applicant who has just arrived in the UK to start a new job which is NOT deemed as professional.
Reference on the International Products provided that the applicant can supply:

    • Passport Number /National Identity Card and Nationality
      • Your documents must be valid and issued by a recognised Government or Authority. The most common examples of travel documents we accept are:

      • National passport
      • 1951 Convention travel documents for refugees
      • We also accept national identity cards for citizens of the European Economic Area.

    • Proof of UK Bank Account
    • Proof of Financial Strength
    • Employment details and Copy of Contract or Job Offer Letter
    • Previous Landlord Details
  5. International applicant who has just arrived in the UK with no job
Not acceptable unless the applicant pays the full rent for the duration of the tenancy in advance.
